G oogle released Android 10 on June 16, and after Google's own Pixel devices, a new operating system version is expected to be updated for third-party Android devices in the coming months. After the release of Android 16, all eyes are on the next version of Android 17.
Now, Google's internal codename for Android 17 has been revealed: Cinnamon Bun. This is reported by the Android Authority website, citing its source. Until the release of Android 9 Pie in 2018, Google publicly used nicknames symbolizing sweet treats, which went in alphabetical order starting with Android 1.5 Cupcake, released in 2009.
However, since Android 10, the following names have only been internal codenames. The alphabetical order of names continued until Android 15 and the name Vanilla Ice Cream, until Android 16 was internally codenamed Baklava.
The alphabetization started with the B platform after Google changed the way it handled Android code. Android 14 QPR2 already had a new version AP1A and QPR3 AP2A. However, the codename for Android 15 was apparently already decided to be Vanilla Ice Cream and that hasn’t changed, which meant that the alphabetical order of codenames was only restarted from the B build, Android 16, and Baklava. And now the order has been resumed with the name Cinnamon Bun for Android 17. Currently, Google is expected to release Android 17 in the summer of 2026, possibly again in June.
