TCL also develops and manufactures phones under its own brand, such as its unique NXTPaper display phones, of which the 50 was a particularly good value for money phone last year. TCL, on the other hand, has owned and still owns several brand name licenses. They owned BlackBerry until 2020, but they still own Palm, and they have now extended the license for the Alcatel name, which expired in 2024. The company is embracing the Make in India initiative, just like HMD did a few years ago, and has been ensuring local production from the start.

This marks a return for Alcatel after its previous presence in the late 90s, before shifting its focus to telecom equipment, which was owned by Nokia in 2016. While details about the upcoming devices remain scarce, Alcatel's global portfolio includes budget smartphones and tablets.

That doesn't mean Alcatel phones will be back everywhere. TCL said it plans to make India the first country to bring back Alcatel phones, and they will be manufactured locally. This will allow TCL to avoid Indian taxes on phones made abroad.

The company aims to bring back the French heritage of the Alcatel brand in terms of design, functionality and user experience. The only information about the first new device is that it will be a phone with a stylus.
