Skype, one of the oldest video chat platforms, will be shut down permanently on Monday (May 5, 2025). Microsoft had previously announced the end of the program, citing the company's focus on developing its Teams application. User data from Skype will be available until January 2026, after which it will be transferred to Teams. As per Microsoft's previous announcement, Skype, the internet-based phone and video service, will be shut down on Monday. According to a newsletter published on the company's website, Microsoft will continue to develop Teams.
Skype will be shut down on May 5, 2025. This change affects both free and paid Skype users, but not Skype for Business. Skype was an Internet telecommunications application that specialized in providing video chat and voice calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices, the Xbox One console and smartwatches. Skype also provided instant messaging services. Users could send text, video, voice messages, and pictures to each other, as well as participate in video conferencing.
Skype users can migrate to Microsoft Teams Free, which offers the same basic features. Sign in to Microsoft Teams for free on any supported device with your Skype credentials, and your contacts and chats will automatically migrate. You will also receive a notification in the Skype app asking you to take steps to migrate your data.
Existing calling and Skype Number subscriptions will automatically renew until April 3, 2025. Skype Dialer is available for remaining paid users on the Skype web portal and in the Teams Free app. To transfer your Skype Number, contact your new provider or find out more here.
