The device is already listed on retailers, and a quick visit to HMD's own website was also made ahead of the launch. The tracking device, called the HMD OffGrid, is coming soon, and according to retailers, the price will be under 200 euros.
The leaked image reveals that the device is a small locator that includes satellite connectivity and a dedicated SOS button. Earlier, certification data revealed the device's line drawing, as well as some details.
The device's satellite connectivity allows it to stay connected in areas and environments where traditional mobile networks do not work. So, in emergency situations, satellite communication could be a vital communication tool. The HMD OffGrid will likely be connected to your phone.
The app’s product description says:
HMD has received approval in the United States for a device with the model number "TA-1698" and codename "Skylynx". The documents reveal that the device supports NB-IoT and GSP technologies, as well as BLE connectivity. In addition, NTN technology is supported, which uses satellites to establish communication links. The device should provide two-way satellite communication, allowing users to send and receive messages.
“Don’t let a lack of network coverage stop you. Connect your phone to the HMD OffGrid satellite tag to send and receive messages – just like a text message. Send regular location updates via satellite to give you, your travel companions and loved ones peace of mind.”
HMD's future device is being developed by Chinese contract manufacturer Tinno, which was also responsible for the Bullitt Group device. HMD has also launched the HMD OffGrid satellite communications app in the Google Play app store, which you can view and download by clicking on the link below!
