NEW DELHI: The Finnish telecom equipment maker on Monday said the company has opened 24 new Smartpur centers in Jammu and Kashmir to promote digital usage in rural areas as well. Smartpur is a digital village ecosystem project that aims to integrate technology into the daily lives of people living in remote villages. Using digital connectivity technology, the project aims to empower licensed local entrepreneurs and empower them to make services available at the village level through panchayat-level Smartpur centers. The initiative connects people to the five fundamental pillars of development, including education, health, livelihoods, governance and financial inclusion, enabling villages to operate more sustainably and independently.
The new centers were inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. "He recognized the potential of the Smartpur program and hoped that Nokia would be able to set up at least two such centers in other districts of the state," Nokia said.
“We are very proud to have delivered on our promise and expanded from 1 to 25 Smartpur centers in Jammu and Kashmir in a year. We are grateful to the local administration for all the help and encouragement,” said Amit Marwah, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Nokia India.
Nokia expanded the project to an additional 90 villages in the past year, bringing the number of Smartpur centers to 350 villages in India across the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
