N etwork equipment maker Nokia is negotiating a multibillion-dollar deal with Indian telecom operator Bharti Airtel, Reuters news agency reported. He bases his information on information from three sources. India is the world's second-largest smartphone market, where companies like Airtel, Reliance (RELI. NS) open a new tab Jio and Vodafone Idea (VODA. NS) open a new tab have spent billions of dollars upgrading their networks to 5G for modernization.

On Monday, Reuters reported that Nokia's Swedish rival Ericsson had also won part of Bharti Airtel's major investment to upgrade its mobile network. Nokia, whose shares rose 3% on the contract report, will report its third-quarter results on Thursday. In the second quarter, Nokia reported an 18% drop in net sales, mainly due to a slowdown in demand in India.

According to information obtained by Helsingin Sanomat, the value of the deal negotiated by Nokia is more than two billion dollars, but Ericsson's share of the telecommunications provider's investment is slightly higher.

India is an important market for network equipment companies as telecom operators invest billions of dollars in upgrading their networks. In addition to Bharti Airtel, telecom operators Reliance Jio and Vodafone have made significant investments. Nokia last month won part of a $3.6 billion contract from Vodafone Idea, which it shared with Ericsson and Samsung.

Samsung has tried to grow its network equipment business, but has so far fallen short of Nokia and Ericsson. Samsung won its first 5G contract with Airtel in 2022. India has blocked its mobile operators from using 5G telecommunications equipment made by China's Huawei.

In late September, Nokia announced that it had won a major contract for Vodafone's fourth and fifth generation mobile network technology in India. Both Ericsson and Samsung have received the majority of Vodafone's investments, but Nokia appears to have the largest stake. In 2022, both Nokia and Ericsson won very large contracts for fifth-generation cellular technology in India. At the time, the companies signed multi-year contracts with India's largest telecom operator, Reliance Jio.
