F innish telecommunications company Nokia has filed a patent for a device, method and computer program that can encrypt digital devices. Nokia’s patent filing shows that the company may be moving towards encrypting digital devices.

On December 23, the patent office of the People’s Republic of China, the China National Intellectual Property Office (CNIPA), disclosed that Nokia Technologies had filed a patent for digital device encryption. According to an English translation of the filing, the patent applies to a device and program that has a component that encrypts digital devices.

The patent also includes indexes of digital devices used for encryption, which the program would provide for its first network function. Although the patent does not seem clear, it shows that the company is moving towards encrypting digital devices and may develop a device that performs this function.

In 2021, the mobile phone company announced Nokia Data Marketplace, an enterprise-level data infrastructure service that uses blockchain technology. The platform uses a permissioned blockchain infrastructure and offers data transactions and analytics. Permissioned blockchains are networks that use distributed ledger technology, but are not fully decentralized. They are embedded with an access layer, so participants can only interact if they have been given pre-approved permission levels. In 2023, the phone maker worked on a 5G-connected microbrewery using metaverse technology. Using augmented reality (AR), Australian researchers worked with colleagues in Germany on collaborative brewing experiments. The researchers simulated brewing in order to "perfect beer in the digital space."

On March 1, the company announced that it will build a network architecture to serve the emerging innovation market. The company expects network demand to grow by 22-25% by 2030. For this reason, the company will invest in its network equipment and service portfolio in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan’s second largest telecommunications provider, has brought its resources and experience to the crypto market. On July 5, the company received a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license from the Taiwan Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC). The VASP license allows the company to create a digital asset exchange.
