HMD Global first entered the world of rugged phones with the 2021 Nokia XR20, elsewhere with a durable design and mid-range specs. Now, HMD has officially announced the successor in the form of the Nokia XR21.
The new phone takes a similar design approach to its predecessor, with an aluminum frame and presumably a polycarbonate back. According to HMD, the phone is MIL-STD-810H certified and IP69K certified for dust and water resistance. The latter is a jump from the older phone's still-great IP68 rating, as it can withstand high-pressure hot water jets. What's more, HMD claims that the new phone can even withstand a pressure washer.

The Nokia XR21 will launch in Europe, Australia and New Zealand with Gorilla Glass Victus protection and a one-year free screen replacement warranty. The company adds that the phone can withstand a drop of up to 1.8 meters.
Take a look at the spec sheet and the Nokia XR21 matches your typical mid-range Android phone. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 695 5G chipset, which is a modest upgrade over the XR20's low-end Snapdragon 480 SoC. We also get 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 6.49-inch 120Hz LCD screen (FHD+ resolution, 500 nits brightness).
HMD's new device also has a 4800mAh battery and 33W wired charging speed. Unfortunately, there's no wireless charging support like the XR20, and we don't get a charger in the box.
Interestingly, the company promises 60% more battery life for this battery than the Nokia XR20. This sounds fantastic, but it simply means that the battery retains 80% capacity after 800 charge cycles – in line with conventional smartphones. This means that the Nokia XR20's battery will unfortunately degrade faster than typical phones.
As for the cameras, we get a 64MP main camera (f/1.79, 0.7 micron pixel size) and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. So it looks like the leak hinting at a telephoto camera was far wrong. A 16-megapixel camera is available for selfies and video calls.
Other notable features include a 3.5mm port, dual stereo speakers, two hardware hotkeys, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, NFC, dual SIM slots, eSIM support, and Android 12. A sticking with the software for now, HMD promises three major OS updates and four years of monthly security patches.
