T oday, Nokia Mobile officially presented the Nokia G42 5G smartphone, which is a device that can be disassembled and assembled for users. HMD's Nokia G42 is the company's latest smartphone designed to be easily repaired by users using parts and kits sold with iFixit.

The HMD Nokia G42 is the company's latest smartphone designed to be easily repaired by users using parts and kits sold with iFixit. The purple version of the device with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will be available starting today for £199 (around $255) in the UK and €249 in Europe. A model with 4GB of RAM will also be sold in select European markets for around €229, but there's no sign of either model coming to the US just yet.

Like the Nokia G22 announced earlier this year, HMD is focusing on easily replacing four key components when they break or wear out over time: the phone's battery, screen, charging port and back. According to Adam Ferguson, the company's product marketing manager, HMD plans to make spare parts available at iFixit for five years.

While I didn't get a chance to repair the Nokia G42 myself, I found it relatively easy to replace the battery on HMD's last repairable phone, the Nokia G22 , while attending Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. It's not quite at the level of tool-less battery replacement offered by Fairphone phones, but it's designed to be done with simpler tools and fewer steps than most other smartphones, including those from Samsung, Google or Apple.

The HMD Nokia G42 is designed to be an affordable phone, and it shows in the chunky bezels. As the name suggests, the Nokia G42 is designed to offer higher levels of features and performance compared to the Nokia G22. This time, for example, it includes support for 5G networks and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 Plus processor instead of the Unisoc T606 found in the Nokia G22. Unfortunately, like the Nokia G22, the new Nokia G42 only gets two major Android updates (it ships with Android 13) and three years of security updates.

HMD's Ferguson said in a briefing that the length of software support has been reduced to the price of the device, and suggested that the length of support offered by chipset manufacturers was also a factor. "Every additional operating system update, even a built-in security update, has a cost," says Ferguson. “So, while you'll be able to put in devices that are £400, £500 or £900 for many, many years to come – down at that £199 level, it's really going to be difficult to continue that. ”He added that consumer feedback suggests that longer software support is "not a deal breaker."

The Nokia G42 has a fairly low IP52 rating, which effectively means it can survive limited amounts of dust and water spray. For reference, the Fairphone 4 has a slightly more robust IP54 rating, meaning it can survive splashing water from multiple directions.

The HMD Nokia G42 has a triple rear camera consisting of a 50-megapixel main, a 2-megapixel depth sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. The phone's 6.56-inch 720p 90Hz display houses an 8-megapixel selfie camera in a teardrop notch, and on the inside, the battery is rated at 5,000mAh and supports fast charging up to 20W. There's a microSD card slot for up to 1TB of additional storage, and available colors will include purple, gray and pink.

Nokia has exited the Russian market due to the Russian embargo

“We're not just doing it to play into a regulation that may or may not come in some form, because even if it does, it's still many years away from being implemented,” Ferguson said. “This is what users want now. As a business, this is what we want to do now. And that's why we invest so much in design and its development how to do it.”

HMD's announcement of the Nokia G42 comes shortly after a European Parliament vote in which lawmakers strongly backed a proposal to require user-replaceable batteries for smartphones and other electronic devices sold in the European Union during the decade. But Ferguson says HMD's plans are influenced more by consumer demand than by upcoming legislation.
