I ndustry experts added that Ericsson is more dependent on its mobile networks business for revenue growth in the Indian segment, unlike Nokia, which has a broader business portfolio that includes mobile networks, network infrastructure, and cloud and network services.
Nokia's India sales grew 75% year-on-year in Q1 2025, driven by robust performance in its network infrastructure (NI) and cloud and network services businesses. The results were further boosted by recent 4G/5G equipment supply agreements with Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel.
This is in stark contrast to Swedish rival Ericsson, which continues to face business challenges in India after five consecutive quarters of declining sales in the Southeast Asia, Oceania and India market.
Industry executives and analysts say Ericsson will now have to rely more heavily on fresh 4G and 5G equipment deals from Vi and Airtel to revive its slumping sales in the Southeast Asia, Oceania and India market, especially as the slowdown in Reliance Jio’s 5G capex has had a more pronounced impact on the Swedish manufacturer than on Nokia.
They say this is because Ericsson supplies around 60% of Jio’s 5G network equipment needs – compared to around 40% for Nokia. As a result, its reliance on Jio for fresh deals in India is significantly higher than its Finnish rival.
Industry experts added that Ericsson is more dependent on its mobile networks business for revenue growth in the Indian segment, unlike Nokia, which has a broader business portfolio that includes mobile networks, network infrastructure, and cloud and network services.
"Within APAC, net revenue in India returned to growth, while the rest of APAC and China declined," Nokia said in its Q1 2025 earnings report.
The Finn added that its fixed network business also grew strongly in the quarter, with net revenue up 9% at constant currency. "This was mainly driven by a strong performance in APAC, where India grew significantly quarter-on-quarter in terms of fixed wireless access deployment."
