In the summer of 2025, Nokia Arena will take the next step in the development of ice hockey rinks when the world's first LED rink, launched in 2021, will be replaced by a new, even more advanced LED rink. The solution will primarily serve the fan experience of ice sports, but will also provide valuable commercial cooperation for ice sports events and clubs.
In 2021, Nokia Arena made history by becoming the world's first arena to introduce an ice hockey rink with integrated LED screens throughout the entire rink. Now, the development work continues as Vepe-Icepro Oy launches a new, even more advanced rink with Finnish expertise.
Nokia Arena's new LED rink will take the game experience to a new level - for both hockey fans and other event guests. The rink’s structure has paid special attention to the comfort and visibility of the audience, as the view of the rink is more open than before, and the protective structures have been renewed to improve the spectator experience. The technical details of the rink have also been refined to meet the needs of the multi-purpose arena. The rink’s structure supports the more efficient transformation and use of events, such as concerts, galas and other large public events. With the development of LED display technology, the brightness, color accuracy and content management of the display surfaces have improved. Visual elements, advertising content and event-specific effects can now be created in a more impressive way than before.
"The renovation of the rink is a natural continuation of the measures we are taking together with the arena company to further develop the hockey experience at Nokia Arena to the international level. In the future, all elite-quality LED rinks will serve even better the hockey fans coming to the arena and the commercial cooperation that is important for the clubs' finances," comment Risto Jalo, CEO of Ilves, and Mika Aro, CEO of Tappara."
The LED rink is being developed by the Finnish company Vepe-Icepro Oy, which has been a pioneer in the field of hockey rinks for almost 50 years.
"It is great to see how Nokia Arena is boldly advancing the development of ice sports events and is ready to invest in a solution that will improve the quality of the events. The renovated LED tray offers even more possibilities in terms of experience, content and commercial solutions. We are proud to be part of this development," says Matti Karmala, Vepe-Icepro Oy."
Previously, the design of artificial lighting was a fundamental element of the project. PERFORMANCE IN LIGHTING supplied more than 900 linear luminaires from the SL764 series for general lighting of large common areas, corridors and large atriums, which were installed in cooperation with Caverion Suomi Oy. The challenge required unique designs, special black surfaces to fit into the architectural structure and comply with the applicable safety regulations. More than 2,000 m of segmented continuous lighting was installed in 2x2 m compositions, giving rhythm to the ceiling by creating a luminous texture. All luminaires were delivered pre-assembled with quick connectors to facilitate installation and reduce assembly time.
The lighting is controlled using the DALI digital protocol, which allows different lighting scenarios to be created and energy consumption to be controlled. This feature contributed to the energy rating of the entire complex, which was awarded LEED Gold thanks to its highly sustainable design.
LG’s impact on Nokia Arena and beyond
As digital transformation transforms everyday life, large public spaces are evolving into hubs of digital interaction, becoming smarter and connected to offer experiences that go beyond traditional entertainment. By integrating advanced digital signage and technologies, modern arenas are demonstrating the potential of smart infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience. LG’s state-of-the-art LED displays at Nokia Arena are a prime example of how technology can enhance the functionality and appeal of public spaces.
On October 10, 2024, the World Organization for Smart Sustainable Cities (WeGo) and the Seoul Metropolitan Government hosted the 2024 Seoul Smart City Awards Ceremony in Seoul, Korea. The event aimed to promote smart city models that prioritize human well-being alongside technological advancements. LG and Nokia Arena received the Seoul Smart City Award in the Human-Centered category in Gória for its cutting-edge digital solutions at the Finnish venue, demonstrating the company’s commitment to enriching event experiences with innovative technology.
A landmark in Tampere, Finland, Nokia Arena is a leisure complex that features a massive, state-of-the-art sports arena that can accommodate up to 15,000 spectators, as well as tourist facilities such as hotels, restaurants and casinos.
At Nokia Arena, LG’s LED signage solutions cover a total of 1,245 square meters and include 456 monitor signage units that are seamlessly integrated into the venue, significantly enhancing the fan experience. LG has partnered with various developers to bring its smart technologies to life, focusing on driving digital inclusion. This includes a wide range of LG digital signage solutions, including video walls, transparent OLED signage and commercial TVs, tailored for retail and guest rooms.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a massive 180 square meter LED cube that immerses the audience in a stunning visual experience, with curved rounded edges that provide a vivid viewing experience from any angle. The seating area is surrounded by a 550-meter outdoor LED banner display, adding dynamic movement to the stadium atmosphere. In addition, LG Ultra Stretch signage further enhances the experience by providing useful information such as digital advertisements and route guidance.
As the demand for digital signage increases across various industries, LG’s innovative LED display solutions are transforming the way businesses connect with their audiences in complex leisure spaces, including stadiums, shopping malls and restaurants. With a human-centric approach, LG is leading the future of display technology with intuitive, user-friendly solutions that enhance the overall user experience.
