HMD Global has revealed that it is scaling back its operations in the US, citing a "challenging geopolitical and economic environment" as the reason for the decision, but will continue to honor warranties and service for existing products.
If you're a fan of HMD Global, the Android phone maker that licenses the Nokia brand, and you live in the US, we have some bad news for you. The company has decided to stop selling its phones in the US. And you can probably guess why.
"Like many global companies, HMD is navigating a challenging geopolitical and economic environment. After careful consideration, we have decided to reduce our operations in the United States.
Our primary goal is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and partners. We will continue to fulfill all our obligations, including warranty services and maintenance of existing products, and provide full support through our global teams.
We value the contributions of our American colleagues and are committed to supporting them in this transformation."
Over on Threads, Wired writer Julian Chokkattu shared a statement that HMD Global sent him. The statement reveals that the company is looking to wind down its operations in the US. As for why it's deciding to exit the US market, HMD cites a "challenging geopolitical and economic environment." This has to do with the US tariff situation, which is increasing costs for both companies and consumers.
While HMD is scaling back its operations in the US, it says it will continue to honor all of its commitments. So, those in the US who own HMD phones will continue to have warranty coverage and can get service on existing products. The company adds that support for US customers will be provided through its global teams.
