The phones, developed in partnership with Tejas Networks and powered by Saankhya’s SL3000 chipset, can stream content even without internet access. On Monday, Human Mobile Devices (HMD) and Lava announced plans to launch feature phones with direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology in collaboration with FreeStream, Sinclair and Tejas Networks.

These devices will be showcased at the World Audiovisual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, which will be held from May 1 to 4 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

Lava has confirmed that it has developed a new feature phone in partnership with Tejas Networks, powered by MediaTek’s MT6261 SoC and Saankhya’s integrated SL3000 chip. The device features a 2.8-inch display, a 2,200 mAh battery, and an ultra-high frequency (UHF) antenna for receiving terrestrial TV broadcasts.

While HMD has confirmed the launch of an affordable D2M feature phone, the brand has yet to reveal any technical specifications. It has, however, confirmed that the device will be powered by Saankhya Labs’ SL3000 chipset.

What is D2M technology and how does it work?

To stream content from platforms like YouTube, Netflix, or other digital services, a device usually needs to be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection. However, with D2M technology, the device can directly receive broadcast signals and stream multimedia content without the need for an active internet connection. This will be similar to listening to FM radio on our phones and in our cars, where it will also transmit video and audio.
