HMD Wonka - Leak reveals mysterious prototype

F innish company HMD Global has once again sparked controversy with a strange and interesting prototype. Well-known leaker Hikari Calyx has posted images and a video of a mysterious phone codenamed "Wonka", and many people immediately think of the colorful bestsellers of the Nokia Asha series and the iconic design language of Lumia.
The device itself is small, but attractive in its details. The placement of the rear camera is strongly reminiscent of the Lumia 830, with the round camera element in the middle. The design is reminiscent of the classic polycarbonate frame that was once Nokia's trademark. Rumor has it that the Wonka may be made of polycarbonate, unlike the previously presented Skyline with a metal frame.
Judging by the user interface, it is not yet a finished product, the video shows lag and lack of optimization, but it may just be a prototype stage software. The backstory seems to be HMD's Better Phone Project, which aims to create simple and purposeful devices.
The physical design of the device and the touch keyboard combined with the small screen suggest that the Wonka could settle somewhere between a feature phone and a smartphone. This kind of concept hasn't been seen much since the Asha days, and it might just be the simple solution that many consumers are looking for.
HMD's possible plan to revive the Asha brand has also been a source of speculation. With the trademark for the Asha name expiring in 2021, a relaunch could be a strong move for the brand, at least for those for whom the Asha represented ease of use and fun design.
Nothing has been officially announced yet, and there's no guarantee that the Wonka will ever hit the market. But if HMD does indeed bring a compact, stylish, and easy-to-use device to the market, it could be a surprisingly fresh breath of fresh air amidst the current technological clutter.
