HMD No Longer Selling Nokia-Branded Smartphones

Well, we can’t say we didn’t expect this; Nokia is no longer in the smartphone world. After years of struggling to maintain its presence in the market, all of Nokia’s smartphones have been removed from HMD’s website. It marks the end of an era in the smartphone market, but it may not be as bad as it seems.

Nokia is one of the biggest icons in the mobile world, despite its reputation having long since faded away. The Finnish brand has been through a very turbulent period in recent years, and this has now culminated in its owner, HMD Global, permanently closing its doors. Nokia smartphones are leaving the scene, and this is the perfect time to remember its most famous devices.

Back in 2017, HMD (formerly HMD Global) acquired the rights to manufacture Nokia-branded phones. At this point, we were all wondering if this was enough to push the struggling Finnish company back to its pre-eminence.

Over the past seven years, the company has... Tried. However, it just hasn't been able to put Nokia on par with Apple and Samsung. We haven't seen any major announcements from Nokia phones in years. It's not like the days when the company announced interesting phones with nine cameras!

So the road hasn't been easy for Nokia. Things didn't really hit the fan, though, until HMD announced that it would be developing its own branded devices. We've had some really interesting HMD-branded phones over the past year, but we've all been wondering what's next for Nokia. Well, it looks like we've got our answer.

If you check out HMD's online stores around the world, HMD has removed all of Nokia's smartphones and tablets from its website. There were 16 Nokia phones and 3 tablets on the site. Even the company’s latest phone, the ultra-durable Nokia XR21, has been given the axe. It was probably the most well-received of the latest Nokia phones. So it seems like the Nokia brand name is quietly fading from the public consciousness over time.

There’s one important thing to note here. You can’t buy Nokia smartphones on the site, but you can buy Nokia-branded feature phones (or “dumb phones”). None of the phones listed on HMD’s website are marked as discontinued. So you can still get them for now.

We’re very curious as to why that is. It could be that the company is waiting for another licensing deal to expire before pulling the plug. Either that, or Nokia’s feature phones are actually making a profit, so it’s worth continuing to sell the phones. Perfected by HMD Global. With a bit of an exaggeration, of course. Nokia was already on the brink (or rather, half-a-foot in the abyss) when it was owned by Microsoft, and it was probably naive to expect that HDM Global, which bought it in 2016, would pull it back into the spotlight. This did not happen, Nokia switched to Android and collected more or less the same as it did with the mobile Windows system under Microsoft.

The original giant of the mobile world weakened, weakened and weakened until HMD decided to completely stop producing phones of the iconic brand. It should be added that Nokia is only entering the world of smartphones, and stupid push-button mobiles with a logo continue to exist. In any case, let's remember the five most famous Nokia mobile phones.
