HMD Global has removed Nokia phones from key markets

HMD Global, the custodian of the Nokia brand, has taken a bold step in its rebranding journey by removing Nokia phones from its websites in key markets such as the UK, Germany and Austria. The move marks a major shift in the company's strategy as it focuses on promoting its own HMD-branded phones. However, Nokia feature phones are still available, and some markets such as the Philippines still have Nokia handsets.

Interestingly, the Nokia brand is still present in certain regions, such as the Philippines, where Nokia smartphones are still listed on HMD's local website (HMD even reportedly unveiled a 2024 version of the Nokia 3210 on September 27, which is available for purchase in Shopee). This suggests that the Nokia brand retains its value in certain markets despite a decline in global visibility.

However, when it comes to feature phones, the Nokia name isn't going anywhere. Nokia-branded mobile phones will continue to be prominently displayed and marketed on HMD's international and regional websites. The difference between smartphones and traditional phones in HMD's marketing strategy shows how the company is handling Nokia's legacy - phasing it out in some areas while maintaining it in others.

While this may disappoint long-time Nokia fans, the decision to shift the focus entirely to HMD-branded devices seems practical. Since HMD primarily sells its own phones now, there's little reason to promote Nokia smartphones that are no longer part of their core lineup. The remaining visibility of the Nokia brand in certain markets indicates that although Nokia's dominance has faded, its story is not over.
