HMD Fusion smartphone is available for pre-order in the US

H uman Mobile Devices (HMD), one of Europe's leading smartphone manufacturers and innovators, is pleased to announce the world's first symbiotic Smart Outfit for HMD Fusion device featuring Venom - The Last Dance. The Smart Outfit prototype was created to celebrate the start of US pre-orders for the Fusion smartphone.

To mark the launch of HMD Fusion US pre-orders, HMD designers have teamed up with Sony Pictures' highly anticipated new action thriller Venom: The Last Dance to create three ultimate unique Smart Outfits for the new Fusion smartphone, featuring symbiotic properties. Venom: The Last Dance Outfit is an innovative smart suit that contains 160 electromagnetic arrays that control a Venom-like fluid - ferrofluid - in a glass chamber that attaches to the Fusion with six pins on the back cover.

Once attached, the Venom - The Last Dance Smart Outfit changes the Fusion's physical appearance and "Venomizes" its software, similar to how Venom and Eddie Brock bond as a fused entity in the film.

HMD, CMO, Lars Silberbauer commented on the Venom: The Last Dance prototype: “This has been a fun experiment– like Venom’s search for its perfect host, the Symbiotic Smartphone Experiment went through countless iterations to master the movement of ferrofluid mimicking the character. The one-off innovation coincides with US pre order going live for HMD Fusion today – a new type of smartphone that can change form.”

The three one-of-a-kind Venom: The Last Dance Smart Outfits that have been created come with a bespoke user interface including Venom wallpapers and icons as well as some of Venom’s best quotes from the upcoming movie which include a “We are screwed” ringtone and a touching voicemail “Eddie, I’m with you till the end.” Even the sounds and alarms are Venomized. HMD Fusion brings the symbiotic bond between Venom and Eddie Brock to life with cutting-edge, shape-shifting technology. Just like Venom merges with its host, Fusion allows custom “Outfits” to seamlessly attach and take over the device. Using six smart pins, these Outfits—much like a phone case—instantly transform both the hardware and software, adapting the smartphone to meet your needs. Fusion outfits that offer protection for Fusion will start rolling out at the end of this year, with smart outfits launching next year including an ultimate selfie outfit as well as a wireless charging outfit arriving in 2025.

The three Venom: The Last Dance Smart Outfits transform the phone’s interface and performance while adding cinematic lines from the latest movie.

When the Venom: The Last Dance outfit is combined with the HMD Fusion device and it boots up, you hear “We are Venom” followed by an animation from the latest movie. The device contains movie easter eggs including an alarm sound that chimes “Eddie, the time has come” and a in your face message notification that yells “Who sent that thing?” in Venom’s voice.

Finally, when you load the phone you will see a voicemail message has been left, that says “Eddie, I’m with you till the end.” And to round off some of the best lines from the upcoming movie, the device has a “We are screwed” ringtone in Venom’s voice.

The Fusion debuted in September with a modular design, and the phone is now available for pre-order in the US. This device is definitely a fresh splash of color in today's range of... kitchen cabinets. We already emphasized this when it was announced, and it didn't take long for the product to confirm this.

One of the special features of the HMD Fusion lies in the Smart Pin connection interface on the back, which can be used to drive external modules. The connector consists of six pins, and the modules that can use the Smart Pin unit will be added to the mobile as a case. The company named them "Outfit", probably precisely because the case dresses up the entire smartphone.

The Finns surprise you with four different modular accessories HMD Fusion has been taken down. It is not known what kind of power the Smart Pins can transfer, but it should be seen that, for example, wireless charging can be solved through it. The company also presented two modules that take care of this functionality. One is a completely simple case with wireless charging, and the other has become a durable case with IP68 support and even has an extra emergency call button, this is designed directly for adventurers.

The interesting thing about the Flashy Outfit is that a brighter LED light can be folded up from its back, and the purpose of this is to provide clarity for videos made with the front camera. This way, vloggers can take better shots with the structure, and the color of the LED ring can even be adjusted. The fourth Outfit is a game controller, gamers will definitely enjoy it, the designers implemented an asymmetric gamepad layout, and thanks to the direct connection, the device will not work with a delay like Bluetooth controllers.

HMD has published the Fuison Kit, in which all the instructions are provided for those interested to design unique modular cases for the smartphone. The accessories can even be produced with a 3D printer. We'll be curious how well this will work for the Finns, how well people will get the modular option, we've seen similar attempts over the past years - they usually bled.

Another special feature of the Fusion is that it has a very industrial appearance, as the screws (16+7 pcs.) that hold the back panel and the entire mobile phone together run into the housing from the outside. HMD designed the device so that everyone will use it with a case, so it doesn't matter what's under the case. Thanks to the external screws, the structure can be easily disassembled, you don't need tools the size of an operating room, you don't need heating, you don't have to fight with glue. Key components such as the battery can be easily accessed while keeping the phone safely together.

That sounds good so far, but unfortunately the Fusion itself isn't particularly interesting. A simple one. we can talk about a basic 5G smartphone with minimum specifications. The display is 6.56 inches and has HD+ resolution. The panel with IPS technology can operate at 90 Hz. It received a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 system chip, which is connected to 6 or 8 GB of system memory and 128 or 256 GB of storage space. The storage can be expanded with a microSD card, which the device supports up to 1 TB.

The Android 14 operating system is used by the Fusion, and HMD has promised two major version updates, so it is expected to reach Android 16. You'll get security updates for 3 years, but that's the minimum you can expect for now, thankfully. It received the Detox mode on the software side, which reduces the capabilities of the device, thus helping to balance the user's digital life.

The mobile phone's front camera is 50 MP and suitable for Full HD video recording. A 108-megapixel main camera has come to the fore on the back, and there is also a 2-megapixel companion that only supports portrait mode. The good news is that there is also an eSIM in the sleeve, and the NFC chip was not left out of the Fusion either. The structure is 8.3 millimeters thick, and its weight is 202 grams. The smartphone has an IP54 certificate. Its battery has a capacity of 5000 milliampere hours and can be charged with a power of 33 watts.
