F using a modern design with robust security features, the HMD Fusion X1 aims to be a phone that kids want and parents can trust. It’s the first device from the brand’s The Better Phone Project initiative, which was announced last summer. The idea is to address the dangers that children and teens face when exposed to the unfiltered dangers of the internet and social media, and the lasting impact they have on children’s wellbeing.

Part of the initiative involved surveying around 36,000 children and parents to understand how both parties feel about smartphones and the problematic baggage that comes with them. The results, unsurprisingly, showed that parents are increasingly concerned about their children’s online safety, with 65% of parents surveyed expressing concerns about the impact the internet has on their children’s mental health.

Even more worryingly, more than half of the children surveyed admitted to seeing something online that they wished they hadn't, and over 40% claimed to have come across sexual or violent content online. Understandably, most parents are hesitant to place their children in the wild west of smartphone ownership, so there has never been a greater need to compromise between the needs of children and parents.

The HMD Fusion X1 really tries to be that compromise, presenting itself as a nondescript smartphone that doesn't embarrass a child with its "baby's first phone" design, while firmly focusing on tight security and extensive parental controls.

This can be achieved using another HMD device, or by downloading the Xplora app on any other brand of smartphone. Here, parents can customize their child's internet access, social media, apps, and general screen time, including a "School Mode" that shuts down distracting apps during school hours—though most schools don't allow cell phone use during the day anyway, so I'm not sure how useful this feature will be.

There are also low battery alerts, SOS calls, and a contact whitelist, which means only people you approve can text or call your child, as well as location tracking. The latter also lets you set up safe zones—like school or home—and the Xplora app will ping you when your child enters and leaves the zone.

All of these settings are customizable, allowing you to tailor the protection to suit you and your child's needs, as well as loosening the restrictions as your child gets older and feels less of a need to keep an eye on them.

From a kid's perspective, the Fusion X1 is designed to offer everything a teenager would want in a smartphone - except for the alluring Apple logo, of course, but you can't help that. There's a decent 108-megapixel main camera, a 5,000mAh battery that can easily get through the day, IP54 splash resistance (admittedly less of a concern for kids, but good for parents to know), fingerprint and face unlock, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

As part of HMD's Fusion line, the X1 can also be customized with a number of "suits." These modular parts connect to the back of the phone via pogo pins and add extra features to the phone. The Gaming Outfit speaks for itself, adding grips to either side of the display and allowing for mobile gaming. The Power Outfit adds a battery pack for extended battery life, and the Flashy Outfit has a ring light for better selfies.

The latter was particularly impressive during my hands-on time with the phone; when you attach the module to the back of the phone, two new buttons appear in the camera viewfinder; the first turns on the light, and the second opens up controls for brightness, color, and temperature. It was seamless in operation, and I can really see it appealing to teens.

Nokia has exited the Russian market due to the Russian embargo

I have prepared the pricing of the HMD Fusion X1 device at the officially announced price of 269 euros (GBP 226, USD 307, INR 26379)!

The dangers that kids face in the untamed wilderness of the internet have long been a concern for parents, and it only gets worse with each new social media trend that comes our way. As such, the idea of breaking this down at the device level and empowering parents to take control of their children’s safety seems like a smart move to me.
