HMD Global has listed a new HMD Dub Audio app on the Google Play app store, which aims to control the company's upcoming headphones. However, the app listing reveals an interesting detail, as HMD's partnership with Indian headphone brand Boat (Imagine Marketing Limited) is hardly a secret.

Several of HMD's branded headphone models have already been featured in various certifications, but the newly released app makes it even clearer that the company is not alone in developing its headphone products. The look and functionality of the app is almost identical to Boat's own boAt Hearables app.

It's easy to notice that the images, marketing texts, and even icons used in the HMD Dub Audio app are pretty much the same as the Boat app. For example, "Big. Bold. Brave." appears in both, and the Boat logos are still visible on the product images. HMD has not yet optimized the app to its own branding, but it appears to be a copy of the Boat version with minor tweaks.

Since the app is practically identical to the Boat version, the question arises as to where user data and device usage logs will end up. Will HMD Dub Audio send the data to HMD Global’s own servers or to systems managed by Indian company Imagine Marketing Limited? That remains to be seen, but it is a legitimate concern, especially from a user privacy perspective.

HMD Global has long hinted at expanding its offering with headphones and other accessories, but the Dub Audio app is the first time that a clear collaboration with Boat has been revealed. It is likely that the upcoming HMD-branded headphones will be heavily based on existing Boat models, but the Finnish brand will launch them under its own name.
