A video of a phone codenamed "HMD Wonka" developed by Finnish company HMD Global has previously leaked online. Now, images of a prototype device codenamed "HMD Compass" have leaked from the same source.
The devices appear to be largely identical, which means that HMD seems to be preparing new devices that fit the middle ground between basic phones and smartphones. The devices are strongly reminiscent of Nokia's former offering, the really cheap Asha touchscreen phones.
Compared to the HMD Wonka phone, the HMD Compass gets a distinctly rounded design. The device will at least have a USB-C connector, a home button, a strap clip, front and rear cameras, and an LED flash. There are three colors available, these are black, cyan, and purple.
There is no information yet about the differences between the phones. Both will get lightweight software, which is likely not Android. The devices would mostly feature feature phone software, but would be optimized for touchscreens. More details are expected to be available soon.
Based on the leaks, the release could take place in the coming weeks. The phones are part of HMD's Better Phone Project, which aims to create simple and purposeful devices, especially for children and young people.
