LAS VEGAS 2025 – As satellite messaging becomes a major feature in smartphones like the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel 9, many devices don’t support the capability. HMD Global aims to bridge that gap with the HMD OffGrid, a new, compact, and rugged device that connects Android and iOS users to satellites, providing connectivity in remote areas where cellular networks aren’t available.

Human Mobile Devices, better known as HMD, is launching an interesting new device at CES 2025. No, it’s not a new smartphone. Instead, HMD has announced the OffGrid — a small, handheld device that brings satellite connectivity to virtually any smartphone.

Once you pair the OffGrid with your Android phone or iPhone and download the OffGrid app, the device will add a few different features to your smartphone — including two-way messaging, location sharing/live location tracking for up to five recipients, check-in messages, and SOS emergency services. The OffGrid allows all of this to work via satellite, meaning you can stay connected even when you’re out of range of your phone’s carrier.

The OffGrid is built for rugged environments, with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H for military-grade durability. That means it can withstand harsh weather conditions, accidental drops, and even submersion in water, so it can handle just about anything. Despite its ruggedness, the device is lightweight at just 2.1 ounces and compact, measuring 3.7 x 2.4 x 0.47 inches. It has a 600mAh battery that HMD claims can last up to three days on a single charge.

Users interact with OffGrid through the HMD OffGrid app, which supports two-way messaging, live location tracking with up to five contacts, and a sign-in feature that allows users to send pre-written messages with a single tap. Messages can be sent to any phone number, even if the recipient doesn’t have the HMD OffGrid app installed. However, recipients will need to download the app to respond. The app also includes an SOS feature powered by Overwatch x Rescue from FocusPoint International, which offers 24/7 multilingual emergency services.

Jean-Francois BarilJean-Francois Baril Co-Founder, Chairman & CEO at HMD Global said: This week, I'm in Las Vegas at CES, and I'm proud to announce the launch of HMD OffGrid—a bold step into Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Communications. This innovation reflects our unwavering commitment at HMD to ensure that human connection remains possible, no matter where you are on the planet.
