All HMD products suddenly disappear from sale

In recent weeks, there has been confusion over the surprising decision of the Finnish company HMD Global to remove all products from its own online store. Speculation has arisen about new EU regulations, a change in strategy and the economic difficulties behind the change. Now, HMD has issued an official statement and brings a new perspective to events.

The company says that this is not a crisis, but a planned change. HMD says that it is moving to a new e-commerce model in Europe. The new shopping experience is scheduled to be released during the summer. During the transition period, the company's products will only be sold through resellers, and all previous orders, warranty services and customer service will operate normally.

HMD emphasizes that the changes come at a time when "HMD is in a strong position and on the right track." In 2024, HMD said it achieved double-digit growth in feature phone volumes. The company also highlights microfinance partnerships in Africa, which have enabled more than 2.5 million customers to access smart devices.

HMD’s official statement:

“HMD is currently revitalizing its direct-to-consumer sales operations in Europe as we plan to launch a completely new shopping experience this summer. In the meantime, our full product range will remain available through trusted retailers, and customer service, returns and warranties will continue to operate as normal.

The changes come at a time when HMD is in a strong position and at speed. We achieved double-digit growth in feature phone sales in 2024. We expanded our operations through microfinance partnerships such as M-KOPA and brought the benefits of smart devices to over 2.5 million customers in Africa. We also launched our first Human Mobile Devices smartphones and recently introduced the HMD Fusion X1 in collaboration with Xplora, a children’s smartwatch company. The device was developed in close collaboration with parents and experts to support families’ digital everyday lives.

The focus is now on three areas of growth "We have: secure devices, built-in microfinance solutions, and safer smartphone experiences for families. In 2025, we plan to build on this foundation with bold launches and new partnerships – bringing technology to market that is not only smart, but truly human."

In addition, HMD emphasizes that recent product launches, such as the HMD Fusion X1 in collaboration with Xplora, a children's smartwatch company, are part of a broader strategy that focuses on secure devices, family-friendly features, and financial solutions.

While HMD's official statement clarifies the situation, some questions remain open. The company has not commented in detail on why the change is happening now, or why it was made without prior notice to users. It also remains to be seen how long we will have to wait for the new online store.

It is noteworthy, however, that the company's global marketing director, Lars Silberbauer, recently left HMD. Several management changes and the sudden closure of the online store continue to raise questions about what kind of internal restructuring is underway at HMD.
