B harti Airtel, one of India's leading telecom companies, has teamed up with Nokia to launch a new initiative called "Green 5G". This partnership focuses on introducing energy efficient solutions and practices across Airtel's mobile networks to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. Using advanced technologies such as AI, Machine Learning (ML) and specialized software, Airtel aims to make its 4G and 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN) more energy efficient.

The Green 5G project will help Airtel use less energy during peak and off-peak hours thanks to innovative software solutions developed by Nokia. These solutions improve the energy usage of Airtel's network, reducing overall energy consumption.

The joint effort is expected to reduce Airtel's carbon footprint by a significant 143,413 tonnes of CO2 annually. This reduction will help Airtel contribute to the global push for greener and more sustainable mobile networks.

The collaboration is expected to reduce Airtel's carbon emissions by an estimated 143,413 metric tons of CO2 annually. This aligns with Airtel's broader commitment to promoting energy efficiency, utilizing renewable energy sources, and building a more climate-resilient infrastructure.

Commenting on the initiative, Randeep Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said: In response to the surging demand for data, mobile networks across India have rapidly expanded, particularly with the rollout of 5G technology. At Bharti Airtel, our commitment to sustainability has led us to collaborate with Nokia. This partnership allows us to leverage innovative solutions that deliver substantial energy savings, enabling us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and further our environmental objectives in alignment with our business strategy.

Tarun Chhabra, Head of Mobile Networks at Nokia, India, said: We are excited to partner with Bharti Airtel to drive sustainable network practices in the country. Nokia has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions globally by 2040. Our innovative technologies will not only enhance the overall performance of communications networks, but also significantly help reduce their energy consumption, contributing to the energy efficiency targets of our customers.

Airtel's Chief Technology Officer Randeep Sekhon expressed the company's commitment to sustainability: "With the rapid expansion of mobile networks and the introduction of 5G in India, the need for energy-efficient solutions is increasing. Airtel is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and our partnership with Nokia helps achieve our sustainability goals while continuing to provide high-quality services to our customers."

Airtel's collaboration with Nokia is in line with its business strategy of balancing network expansion with environmental responsibility. The use of advanced technologies ensures that the company is able to meet the growing demand for data services while keeping its energy consumption under control.

Nokia plays a key role in this initiative. According to Tarun Chhabra, Head of Mobile Networks, Nokia India, the company is excited to partner with Airtel in this mission. "Nokia has a global goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and this partnership with Airtel is part of that journey. Our technology helps reduce energy consumption in telecom networks, making them more efficient and sustainable,"Chhabra said.

Nokia's innovative approach not only improves the performance of Airtel's mobile networks, but also significantly contributes to reducing energy consumption. This partnership represents a significant step towards greener telecommunications networks.

The Airtel-Nokia partnership highlights the growing importance of sustainability in the telecom industry. By combining cutting-edge technologies and energy-efficient solutions, both companies set an example of how mobile networks can develop while reducing their environmental impact. As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, initiatives like green 5G will be key to reducing carbon emissions across industries and promoting responsible energy use.
