N okia's research shows that API is one of the top five priorities for 73% of service providers. Telecommunications providers are open to network APIs (application programming interfaces), according to a Nokia survey by Analysys Mason, a consulting firm specializing in technology, media and telecommunications. According to the study, this segment is one of the top five priorities for 73% of service providers.

These companies are turning to open APIs and SDKs (software development kits), enabling software developers to create programs that offer new 5G services to end users.

According to Shkumbin Hamiti, head of network monetization platform and cloud services at Nokia, “A new digital ecosystem is emerging in the world of 5G, where multiple service chains form the hyper-scalable operators, infrastructure, networks and applications that strive to create value. the end user. This research highlights the desire to foster this ecosystem and the work that needs to be done to foster a deeper understanding between CSPs and developers, and to explore what work is needed between them.

The survey showed that 60% of developers want to write programs that can improve applications and offer new services to customers, with better quality and on demand.

Large-scale employment of software developers is increasingly important for the creation and delivery of 5G services, as they will contribute to the monetization of 5G. Telecom service APIs play an important role in 5G monetization, as they can expose the functionality and data of telecom networks, enabling the development of new use cases for enterprise customers and end users.

“Telecom service providers (CSPs) have the opportunity to generate additional revenue by partnering with developers and other CSPs to create a larger ecosystem. CSPs should consider adding their API to a third-party Network as a Service (NPaaS) platform, partner with developers, and build an ecosystem that includes other CSPs to avoid fragmentation that could undermine the viability of this opportunity," says Caroline Chappell, partner at Analysys Mason.

In the survey, about half of developers cited some issues when using cloud and SaaS services, such as the need to better understand how network quality affects the performance of their applications and what needs to be done to improve performance. control this process.

For the survey, 44 telecommunications service providers (CSPs) and 67 software development companies worldwide were interviewed to assess attitudes towards the network concept and various dimensions of platform-as-a-service (NPaaS), sometimes referred to as Network. -Code or programmable network.

Nokia estimates that the market for services enabled by telecom APIs is expected to grow from US$12 billion (R$60 billion) in 2022 to US$34 billion (R$170 billion) by 2026.
