US President Donald Trump thundered after the European Commission announced on Friday that Google had been fined €2.95 billion for favoring its own services in ad technology.
After the new fines were announced, Trump threatened to launch an investigation to overturn the fines.
"We cannot allow this to happen to brilliant and unprecedented American ingenuity, and if it does, I will be forced to take action under Section 301 to overturn the unjust penalties imposed on American taxpayers,"Trump wrote in Truth Social."
Trump suggested that Europe was "virtually taking money that would otherwise go to other American investments and jobs."
"This is in addition to the many other fines and taxes imposed on Google and other American technology companies,"Trump wrote. "It is very unfair and the American taxpayer will not tolerate it!"
Trump also recalled a previous Apple tax ruling that required Apple to pay additional taxes and interest to Ireland.
"Trump said Apple "must get its money back."
Many technology leaders attended a dinner at the White House on Thursday. At the event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai thanked Trump after a U.S. court judge ruled largely in Google's favor on changes required of Google following a previous antitrust ruling. Pichai said he appreciated the Trump administration's "constructive dialogue."
