On the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which is held on May 17 every year, the Technical University of Timisoara, together with Nokia Networks, inaugurated the 5G Laboratory at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Technical University (ETcTI).

In the strategic partnership between Nokia and UPT, which began more than 30 years ago, the priorities were continued support for better technical education and research, and better integration between academia and business. The aim of the joint actions was to adapt information content and educational standards to European and global requirements. In addition, Nokia is one of the founding members of UPT’s Board of Directors and has invested more than € 1 million in laboratory equipment over the years.

The inauguration of 5G Lab today is a new milestone in this partnership and will provide the necessary infrastructure for students to develop state-of-the-art telecommunications skills. The lab includes an end-to-end 5G platform with radio equipment, servers, mobile terminals and 16 compact all-in-one systems to access them, with an investment of more than € 200,000.

During the collaboration, Nokia worked with ETcTI through courses, seminars, labs, competitions, projects and summer internships with the support of Nokia professionals. Nokia is also proud that UPT is the main source of recruitment, with more than 65% of its employees graduated from Timisoara University of Technology and 30% of them with ETcTI degrees. UPT has been and will remain a key partner in Nokia's events.

Florin Dragan, Rector and Associate Professor at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, said: “Today we are inaugurating another laboratory at the Polytechnic of one of our university’s important partners. In addition to the investment, which is important, but ultimately normal, given the University of Technology’s relationship with the private environment, we are also talking about investing in university students, through internships or training opportunities. We are talking about a partnership with Nokia not only in terms of education, but also in terms of entrepreneurship, extracurricular, multidisciplinary or cultural. Nokia has a very good understanding of what we are building here, because I have an ongoing dialogue with the university, our faculties, and the success of one of the two partners is the success of the other. ”

About the opening of the lab, Sabin Totorean, Nokia’s chief national officer, said: “Our collaboration with Timisoara University of Technology is part of Nokia Networks’ development strategy in Romania, and today’s inauguration marks a new milestone in this collaboration of more than 30 years. 5G technology enables a myriad of new digital services for consumers, businesses and government. In addition to the didactic goals of the laboratory, to work with university students and faculty to develop and test new uses for 5G technology in the development of intelligent solutions that will define the digital economy. This lab allows us to explore the potential of 5G in an experimental environment and work with our partners to renew the new networks of the future, providing a better user experience.

Florin Ciocan, ecosystem and innovation garage manager. said: “Through our activities with the Technical University of Timisoara, we have succeeded in making Nokia Romania an open partner in education and R&D innovation. The inauguration of the 5G Laboratory is part of a series of initiatives in support of the education system that began 30 years ago and have benefited thousands of students over time. Our motto is “Education - the best investment in the future of a country” and this will encourage us to continue to come up with the most interesting ideas and projects at the Technical University of Timisoara”.
