T hales and its transmission network technology partner Nokia have signed a contract with Transport for London (TfL) for a comprehensive communications upgrade to support the safe operation of the tube network.

This renewal will ensure that TfL's multi-service network (MSN) operates at peak performance, minimizing operational risks, travel disruption and costs to TfL.

MSN serves as the underlying infrastructure supporting Connect, Thales' system responsible for the critical communications ecosystem underpinning the London Underground. This includes the radio, transmission and operational CCTV technology used by TfL staff to maintain smooth operations, making MSN vital to the efficiency of the rail network and ensuring a safer and smoother passenger experience.

Older systems can slowly become unreliable and disrupt services, leading to delays and an overall negative impact on passenger journeys. Providing a data-driven, integrated and timely update – such as the one led by Thales and Nokia – proactively addresses these concerns without impeding passenger mobility.

Nokia's IP/MPLS network solution forms the backbone and complements this system by providing a secure, reliable and scalable connection, ensuring that the foundation of this communication ecosystem is solid and sustainable.

"We are delighted to be partnering with TfL and Nokia on this critical project," said Andy Bell, UK vice president of Thales Transport. "Renovating the multi-service network in a way that minimizes service disruptions is essential to ensure that the underground is safe, reliable and efficient, and not a burden on passengers. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to continued rail innovation and to prioritizing passenger mobility and operational excellence.”

Matthieu Bourguignon, Vice President and Head of Network Infrastructure Europe at Nokia, added: “Transport for London plays a vital role in the city, carrying up to four million passengers a day on the London Underground network. Renovating and preparing the communications network for the future is essential to maintaining and developing this critical London infrastructure. Together with Thales, we will use our expertise and technology to deliver a reliable, secure and efficient solution that will improve TfL's operations and services for years to come.”
