TP-Link could be banned from the US

The FCC is investigating TP-Link, citing national security risks from broader Chinese tech moves. Amid renewed trade tensions between the US and China, Washington is also tightening its controls on Beijing's technology. It is reportedly restricting domestic sales of Chinese electronics and is considering business suspension measures against Chinese telecom equipment manufacturers.

"Major US online retail sites have removed millions of prohibited Chinese-made electronics products from their sales lists,"said Brendan Carr, chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The items removed were either on the US list of prohibited equipment or did not have FCC approval. These included security cameras and smartwatches made by Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE. Carr added, “China could spy on Americans, disrupt communications networks, and threaten U.S. national security."

The U.S. government has recently imposed restrictions on Chinese technology companies, citing national security threats. In 2021, the FCC added Chinese companies including Huawei and ZTE to a list of entities that pose a threat to U.S. national security, barring U.S. businesses from using federal funds to purchase their equipment or services. In November 2022, it banned domestic sales of telecommunications equipment from these companies. The FCC announced in March that it was investigating nine Chinese companies, including Huawei. It plans to vote this month on strengthening regulations against Chinese telecommunications equipment that it considers a national security risk.

Bloomberg reported that the US government is considering restricting the domestic operations of TP-Link, a Chinese equipment manufacturer with ties to Beijing. TP-Link makes Wi-Fi equipment. US policymakers have expressed concern that Chinese hackers could exploit its wireless communications equipment.

Bloomberg said the US government has been investigating TP-Link’s ties to the Chinese government since last year and is reviewing whether to make an “initial determination” of whether it poses a national security threat. Although preparations for the ruling were completed months ago, the related proceedings are now moving quickly, Bloomberg noted. If TP-Link is found to pose a threat to US security, it could be restricted or banned from operating domestically.
