Q ualcomm Technologies, Inc. today announced the Snapdragon6 Gen 5 Mobile Platform and Snapdragon4 Gen 5 Mobile Platform, expanding its portfolio with next-generation capabilities designed for real-world experiences. By leveraging the technologies that users rely on most, these platforms strengthen Snapdragon’s mobile offerings with stronger performance and longer battery life.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, in particular, brings a number of features we’ve seen before, mostly in more expensive chips. Qualcomm says the new chip will include Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 and Adaptive Performance FPS 3.0 technologies, which are designed to smooth game frame rates and reduce stuttering. There’s also Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, which upscales while improving battery life.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor has four cores that can reach a clock speed of 2.6 GHz, as well as four cores at 2.0 GHz. In the previous Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, only one core reached 2.3 GHz. Qualcomm says the new Adreno GPU offers up to 21 percent better performance while improving power efficiency by eight percent.
The chip is still manufactured on a 4-nanometer process and supports LPDDR5 memory up to 3200 megahertz, as well as UFS 3.1 storage. In terms of displays, support reaches Full HD+ with a refresh rate of 144 Hz.
Qualcomm also highlights the new Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI feature, which speeds up app opening and reduces UI stutter. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is said to open apps up to 20 percent faster and reduce stuttering by 18 percent compared to its predecessor.
On the camera side, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 supports 200MP cameras, along with a number of AI features, including AI night vision, image quality improvements, and up to 100x digital zoom. Video can still be recorded in a maximum resolution of 4K at 30 frames per second.
"With Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, we’re expanding what users can expect from their smartphones—compelling experiences powered by robust performance and dependable battery life,” said Chenwei Yan, Senior Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “This launch underscores our focus on delivering impactful solutions, with each platform intentionally designed to strike the right balance of performance, power efficiency and connectivity—helping our partners deliver next-generation smartphone experiences to more users globally.”
"Our long‑standing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies helps us bring meaningful innovation to smartphones at every tier,” said Jun Li, Vice President, Xiaomi Smartphone and General Manager, Smartphone Product Division. “We look forward to bringing these two new Snapdragon platforms to upcoming devices, enabling smoother interactions, elevated performance, improved power efficiency, and dependable connectivity that enhances everyday experiences for users."
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 also brings significant improvements to the lower price range. Qualcomm says the new Adreno GPU offers up to 77 percent better performance than the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4. It's also the first chip in the Snapdragon 4 series to support 90 FPS gaming. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI enables 43 percent faster app launches and 25 percent less UI stuttering than the previous generation. Power efficiency is also promised to improve by around 10 percent.
However, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 also comes with a significant compromise, as support for LPDDR5 memory has been completely removed. The new chip only supports the slower LPDDR4X memory. In terms of 5G connectivity, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 gets a major overhaul with Dual SIM Dual Active support, which allows for the simultaneous use of two networks. In addition, download speeds increase to up to 2.8 gigabits per second on sub-6 GHz networks. The first smartphones with Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chips will be launched in the second half of the year. Qualcomm has confirmed that Honor, Oppo, Realme, and Redmi, among others, are working on new devices around the new chips.
