The European smartphone market is on its way to recovery, growing by 6% a year in the first quarter of 2021 after a year of COVID-19. The latest analysis from Counterpoint Research shows encouraging signs for the smartphone markets in Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, all of which showed a good start to 2021.

The smartphone market in Finland and the Netherlands grew by 28% and 14% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2021, respectively, while in Denmark it declined by 17% over the same period. Samsung has led in all three markets, and the strategy to launch the Galaxy S21 series earlier than usual this year has proved successful. Samsung had more than 35% stakes in Finland and Denmark and more than 50% in the Netherlands.

In the Dutch smartphone market, Nokia Mobile has unfortunately reached 0%, proving how much Nokia devices are not bought by people in the Netherlands, while on the graph you can see that in Denmark it is only 5%, which is quite small compared to the Finnish telecoms giant. You can see from the statistics that the European mobile market is still dominated by Samsung, followed by Apple in the US and Xiaomi in Asia. This has unfortunately made it clear over and over again how far Asian mobile device manufacturers have pushed the Finnish telecoms giant out of the European market they thought was their own.

In all three markets, average sales prices (average selling prices) increased compared to the first quarter of 2020. Strong consumer demand for the iPhone 12, the early launch of the Samsung S21 series, and the arrival of new 5G phones for Xiaomi and OnePlus lovers have contributed to the growth. In ASPs. Growth in volume and ASP is a major indicator of growth in consumer confidence.

In terms of best-selling models, the iPhone 12 retained the overall top spot, while OnePlus Nord ranked first in Android phones. In the affordable premium category ($ 400-599 wholesale), the great performance of the OnePlus 8 Series has made OnePlus a leader over the past 3 quarters.

OnePlus has diversified its product portfolio over the past year. Thanks to more diverse products, OnePlus was able to grow 100% overall Q1 2020 Q1 compared to 2020 and became the 2 nd largest brand in the mid-range price range ($ 200- $ 299 wholesale).

Samsung’s performance may indicate market dominance, but Xiaomi’s and OnePlus ’growth of more than 300% over the past year is a sign that competition is intensifying, especially in the premium market. OnePlus ranked third behind Apple and Samsung in the affordable premium and premium price categories, with annual growth of 17% and 261%, respectively.
