The European smartphone market is on its way to recovery, growing by 6% a year in the first quarter of 2021 after a year of COVID-19. The latest analysis from Counterpoint Research shows encouraging signs for the smartphone markets in Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, all of which showed a good start to 2021.

The smartphone market in Finland and the Netherlands grew by 28% and 14% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2021, respectively, while in Denmark it declined by 17% over the same period. Samsung has led in all three markets, and the strategy to launch the Galaxy S21 series earlier than usual this year has proved successful. Samsung had more than 35% stakes in Finland and Denmark and more than 50% in the Netherlands.

In the Dutch smartphone market, Nokia Mobile has unfortunately reached 0%, proving how much Nokia devices are not bought by people in the Netherlands, while on the graph you can see that in Denmark it is only 5%, which is quite small compared to the Finnish telecoms giant. This has unfortunately made it clear over and over again how far Asian mobile device manufacturers have pushed the Finnish telecoms giant out of the European market they thought was their own.

In all three markets, average sales prices (average selling prices) increased compared to the first quarter of 2020. OnePlus ranked third behind Apple and Samsung in the affordable premium and premium price categories, with annual growth of 17% and 261%, respectively.
