N okia has announced a major step in its space ambitions. The company plans to spin off its Modul8 space communications business into a separate, independent entity. The plan comes as part of a definitive agreement with Celestial Acquisition Corp. that aims to give Modul8 greater flexibility, funding and speed in the rapidly growing space communications market.
Modul8, formerly part of Nokia Bell Labs, focuses on developing communications and computing solutions for space, including hardware, software and services designed for extreme environments. The team made headlines back in 2025 when it deployed the first mobile network on the Moon during the IM-2 mission.
The company is working with Axiom Space to integrate its technology into the next-generation lunar module (AxEMU), part of NASA’s Artemis program.
By spinning off Modul8, Nokia hopes to:
Despite the spin-off, Nokia will remain a significant shareholder and will continue to support space connectivity, especially as non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) become key to future technologies such as 6G. The deal is expected to close by early summer 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. The move underscores Nokia’s strategy of taking innovations from Bell Labs research to real-world impact, even if that sometimes means expanding outside the company.
