Nokia to buy Juniper RIC business as open RAN options dwindle

J uniper RIC’s whereabouts have been a mystery to those interested in open RAN. Two years ago, the company’s smart radio access network (RAN) controller showed up in tests with Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, after previously being tested by Vodafone. But it has kept an unusually low profile in recent months as attention has focused on HPE’s now-finalized acquisition of Juniper, which the U.S. Department of Justice initially tried to block. Most of the chatter in the RIC world has been about Ericsson’s bid, which is used in AT&T’s network.
All the mystery is over with today’s news that Juniper’s RIC and SMO (service management and orchestration) tools have been acquired by Nokia, Ericsson’s big European rival. After Broadcom recently spun off VMware’s RIC business, the move further reduces the number of platforms available to operators. It also likely reflects concerns about the continued slow growth of the open RAN market.
While the companies involved in the deal haven’t made a formal announcement, Constantine Polychronopoulos, vice president of 5G and telecom cloud at HPE-owned Juniper Networks, made the announcement in a LinkedIn update. “I’m excited to share that our RIC and SMO team and I will be joining Nokia on October 1, 2025!” he wrote. Other sources have privately confirmed that this is a formal acquisition.
