Nokia sues media company Paramount in US and Brazil over patent infringement

N okia says the media company infringes on 13 of Nokia’s patents related to video streaming technology. Specifically, the media company’s Paramount+, Pluto TV, BET+ and others services infringe Nokia’s video compression patents.

Paramount recently merged with Skydance, making Skydance the parent company of Paramount. The deal, originally announced in July 2024, closed on August 7.

“Our goal is to avoid litigation, but Paramount has left us no choice,” Nokia told Reuters. Nokia said in court documents that it had been in talks to license the patents to Paramount in 2022, but no deal has been reached.

In April 2025, Nokia also sued computer manufacturers Acer, Asus, and Hisense for infringement of its video technology patents. In late March, Nokia announced that it had reached a patent settlement with Amazon regarding its video technology patents. In the fall of 2023, Nokia sued Amazon for patent infringement. In the fall of 2024, Nokia signed an agreement with HP to license its video technology patents.

Since 2000, Nokia has invested more than 150 billion euros in research and development. Nokia has previously reported that its inventions have had a major impact on the development of video codecs, including the widely used H.264/AVC standard and the H.265/HEVC standard. The technologies, or codecs, enable large video files to be transmitted more efficiently over networks by reducing file size. According to Nokia, the technologies have played an important role in the development of PCs and smart TVs, as well as in improving the user experience - for example, enabling the use of 4K and 8K resolution content.
