Nokia expects to recognize the revenue related to this new patent license agreement starting in January 2024. The agreement is consistent with the assumptions Nokia has disclosed in the commentary with respect to Nokia Technologies long-term outlook in its Financial Report for Q1 issued on April 20, 2023.
Nokia sues Amazon and HP for patent infringement over video streaming technology

N okia has filed a lawsuit against Amazon over the use of its video-related technology in Amazon's streaming services and devices. Similar proceedings were initiated against HP in the United States for the unauthorized use of Nokia's proprietary video technology.
According to Nokia, the Amazon Prime Video and Twitch streaming services, as well as HP computers, infringe on its patents related to streaming video compression, delivery and other technology.
Amazon and HP refused to license the patents and instead misused Nokia's technology to enable more efficient, high-quality video streaming, the suit says.
Nokia also said in a blog post on Tuesday that it has filed related lawsuits against Amazon in Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Unified Patent Court.
An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation. HP representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
I want to stress that litigation is never our first choice. The vast majority of our patent licensing agreements are agreed amicably. To put this into context, since 2017, we have concluded or extended over 250 licenses – including amicable licenses with Apple and Samsung - and launched just 6 litigation campaigns. We’ve been in discussions with each of Amazon and HP for a number of years, but sometimes litigation is the only way to respond to companies who choose not to play by the rules followed and respected by others. And let’s be clear: Amazon and HP benefit significantly from Nokia’s multimedia inventions.
Nokia transitioned from making mobile phones in the 2000s and 2010s to focus on other areas such as research and development and supplying network equipment to other companies. Dozens of companies have licensed Nokia's video encoding and decoding patents, which enable video streaming with higher quality, lower bandwidth and data storage requirements, according to the lawsuits on Tuesday. Nokia has said some patents are essential to the International Telecommunication Union's standards for video coding technology, and has offered licenses to Amazon and HP on fair terms.
The company asked the court for an injunction to block the alleged infringement by Amazon and HP and sought an unspecified amount in damages.
Via LinkNokia said in its 5G wireless patent license announcement with Apple earlier this year that its patent portfolio is built on more than €140 billion in research and development and includes around 20,000 patent families.
