As part of the company's efforts to reduce its impact on the environment, Nokia has discontinued some of the accessories that come with its smartphones and tablets. A charger and wired headphones are the two products most conspicuously missing from the brand's lineup, despite its commitment to other sustainability initiatives. HMD said it has planted more than 418,000 trees so far, and the tree planting initiative is expanding to other countries around the world. A collaboration between HMD Global and Ecology, the tree planting campaign is part of this partnership.

As part of the company's strategy to promote environmental sustainability, Nokia has revealed its intention to sell refurbished phones. The 2023 Sustainability Report was recently made available by HMD Global, licensee of the Nokia brand for smartphones and tablets. The report provides an overview of the steps taken by the company to increase the reputation of the organization responsible for environmental protection. In addition to an ongoing initiative to plant more trees, the company recently started refurbishing Nokia phones to resell them.

Nokia has been recognized with a number of awards, including the Ecovardis Platinum Award 2023, which is awarded to the world's leading companies that demonstrate exceptional sustainability practices. British and German consumers are buying used devices due to the recycling of old Nokia phones. In addition, Nokia intends to expand the reach of the recycling program to additional markets. Buyers can take advantage of this opportunity and save money by buying used Nokia phones that are still in good condition.

Additionally, HMD donates phones that are returned to them and refurbished to charities instead of sending them to landfill. The company has donated around 700 smartphones to people who do not have access to digital technology. In addition, the company helped remove 3.5 tons of plastic waste from the rivers. HMD Global's initiative to refurbish and resell pre-owned Nokia phones currently only applies to the company's European operations. Nokia continues to have a strong presence in the European market. However, the company is also experiencing a decline in sales in several other markets. To that end, it will be fascinating to see how HMD Global expands this initiative to additional markets.
