N okia has announced the launch of 5G Edge Slicing on a live retail network with mobile operators Cellcell and Telia. Nokia's innovative Edge Slicing solution enables service providers to offer their enterprise customers next-generation, secure, reliable and high-performance virtual private network (VPN) services over commercial 4G and 5G networks.

Once launched, both companies will be able to offer new services to their customers, creating new revenue opportunities, and partner with cloud application and infrastructure providers. Nokia's solution is now available to a global customer base.

The trial version of Nokia and Cellcom’s sliced RAN-Transport-Core is taking place in Netanya, Israel, and will focus on business applications and the customer experience, as well as corporate connectivity over the high-speed metro network. Nokia and Telia are running a live trial in Tampere, Finland, along with Sandvik's high-tech global engineering team. The test shows how the next generation 5G Edge Slicing features can work with a variety of mining equipment and digital applications.

The Nokia 5G Edge Slicing solution is an enhancement to Nokia's previously announced 4G / 5G slicing capability. It allows operators to maintain critical business data at the local level while running slice management, control and insurance on existing central mobile data centers, ensuring cost and operational efficiency. In addition, it can be scaled and the same virtualized network infrastructure can be used by multiple customers in the same area, such as in a multi-enterprise business campus. Depending on the needs of enterprise customers, the 5G VPN can be flexibly deployed in an area with a 4G / 5G base station or in a university, city, or regional area. With Nokia, CSPs can now offer on-premises 5G private networks or 5G virtual private networks to their customers.

Joe Madden, chief analyst at Mobile Experts, said: “Network slicing is the most exciting aspect of 5G as it raises the possibility of new dimensions of‘ higher performance ’and enhanced ARPU for both consumers and enterprise customers. While many providers are focusing on building 5G private networks for businesses, network slicing is also opening up new market opportunities for providers with 5G virtual private networks by keeping enterprise traffic local using Edge Slicing using the existing 4G / 5G network.”

Yaniv Koriat, Cellcom Israel’s technical director and vice president of engineering, said: “Cellcom is one of the largest telecommunications groups in Israel and we have been working closely with Nokia for a long time. Their new 5G Edge Slicing solution enables Cellcom to stand out in the market with its innovative enterprise solutions. It also allows us to develop new opportunities with cloud application providers.”

Jari Collin, Chief Technical Officer of Telia Finland, said: “We are delighted to be the first to launch the first 5G Edge Slicing solution with Nokia and our key customer Sandvik, who are investing heavily in digital mining technologies and the technology environment. . test mine in Tampere. Our advanced 5G network supports our customers' business by enabling new services and making the network more efficient. We will continue to develop innovations and the latest applications as our mission is to bring the capabilities of 5G to our customers. ”

Tommi Uitto, President of Nokia’s Mobile Network Division, said: “Nokia was the first provider to offer a network slicing solution and we are proud to continue this pioneering story by being the first to offer 5G Edge Slicing to our customers. These successful experiments cover different use cases and customer needs and demonstrate the possibilities of network slicing. I look forward to growing in this important new area and offering opportunities to our customers next year.”

The distributed and sliced 5G perimeter architecture creates partnership opportunities for mobile operators and cloud and infrastructure providers.

High-performance virtualized networks allow service providers to bring cutting-edge cloud application platforms close to enterprise customers. The facilities of co-location and infrastructure companies can also be used for edge slicing installations.

High-performance virtualized networks allow service providers to bring cutting-edge cloud application platforms close to enterprise customers. The facilities of co-location and infrastructure companies can also be used for edge slicing installations. Combined with 5G Edge Slicing and Nokia’s new Adaptive Cloud Networking solution, which aims to automate the extreme cloud network, it opens up additional opportunities for service providers to create value for businesses.

Nokia’s 5G network slicing solution supports all LTE, 5G non-standalone and 5G stand-alone (SA) devices, allowing mobile operators to leverage a vast device system and reach a large customer base. This allows operators to leverage existing 4G / 5G network equipment, spectrum and coverage for next-generation VPN services. Nokia's network slicing solution is based on 3GPP, IETF and TMForum standards and architecture and works in multi-vendor environments.

Nokia has also announced the introduction of a new automated RAN slice management solution that will allow service providers to select, deploy and manage slices across multiple RAN locations based on their customers ’needs. The new solution, which supports LTE, 5G NSA, and 5G SA RAN slice management, consists of quality of service, resource partitioning, RAN traffic separation and planning, and per-slice security management features. By gathering key performance metrics for 4G / 5G base stations, operators can provide a level of network slicing service to their enterprise customers. RAN Slice Automation has APIs for Nokia Digital Operations software that allow end-to-end instrumentation and fuse.
