The Austrian utility and infrastructure company Energie AG Oberösterreich commissioned the Finnish telecommunications operator Nokia to build an optical transmission network at 18 sites in Upper Austria.

Energie AG Oberösterreich will use the network to transfer traffic from fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) nodes at regional sites to two central sites. He also added that the installation is already underway. The upgrade will leverage Nokia's portfolio of optical networking hardware and software.

It includes the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform, powered by the Photonic Service Engine (PSE) coherent technology, and the Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) automation software suite.

Werner Steinecker, CEO of Energie AG Oberösterreich, said: "By investing in the 7,000 km optical transmission network across Upper Austria, we hope to significantly improve our customers' high-speed fiber access experience."

Patrick Langelaan, VP of Nokia Enterprise CBT Europe South, said: “Over the past two years, it has become very clear that scaling fiber-based connectivity virtually everywhere is a key economic driver for every country. Local and regional communication providers can play an important role in providing this ultra-fast connection”.

Energie AG Oberösterreich is a regional energy supply and infrastructure company. The group operates with its subsidiaries and holdings in the energy sector, i.e. in the fields of electricity, natural gas and heat, as well as water and waste disposal.

Energie AG's subsidiary, Energie AG Telekom GmbH, currently operates a fiber optic network of more than 7,000 km.
