N okia and HMD Global have quietly agreed to extend their licensing agreement for Nokia feature phones, pushing the expiration date by three years beyond the original 2026 deadline to 2029. Neither Nokia nor HMD have commented publicly on the extension, but sources confirm that the deal has been done.
Nokia has extended its licensing agreement with HMD Global to sell Nokia feature phones by another three years beyond the original 2026 expiration, sources familiar with the development said.
"Nokia has extended its licensing agreement with HMD Global by another two to three years beyond the original 2026 expiration, ensuring that its iconic feature phones will continue to be sold through HMD," the source said.
India is Nokia's largest market for feature phones, and HMD also exports Nokia phones from the country. According to IDC, HMD already dominates the Indian feature phone market with 22.4 percent of the market and about 30.7 percent in value. India remains the world's largest feature phone market. IDC expects India to ship nearly 54 million feature phones by 2024.
"The extension of the licensing agreement ensures continuity of operations for both companies. For Nokia, it ensures a brand presence in a category that it once defined globally, while for HMD, it gives access to a legacy name that still resonates strongly in both urban and rural India," the source said."
HMD has indicated that future product lines will span Nokia devices, HMD-branded smartphones and tablets, and potential collaborations with third-party brands, as it aims to diversify its portfolio while reducing its reliance on a single legacy brand.
