The call was made over the air at the AT&T facility in New Jersey, USA, with Nokia's next-generation vRAN2.0 virtualized distributed unit (vDU) and virtualized centralized unit (vCU). Testing included various data transfer profiles such as web surfing, video playback, and network speed measurement.

Mazin Gilbert, network automation and analysis at AT&T said: "This concept control is an integral part of AT & T's and Nokia's joint effort to advance an open, programmable, and virtualized RAN that is at the heart of AT & T's 5G network evolution strategy."

Pasi Toivanen, Head of Nokia Edge Cloud Platforms BU. said: “The AT&T and Nokia teams have demonstrated the maturity of the fully virtualized Cloud RAN architecture. This is important because it paves the way for Nokia and AT&T to take the next steps in controlling Cloud RAN technology, as well as helping to develop scalable and smart 5G networks. The successful completion of the project has also overcome the challenges posed by the COVID epidemic, so the team can be proud of this joint achievement.

The fully cloudified and disaggregated Cloud RAN used in the trial is optimal for Open RAN (O-RAN), splitting the base station into Radio Unit (RU), virtualized Distributed Unit (vDU), virtualized Centralized Unit (vCU) and O-RAN compliant interfaces between...read more
