HMD Global has announced that it has made available its recently announced Nokia X20 smartphone in Kenya. It is one of the latest in the company and can be purchased in stores for 40,000 Ksh.

Nokia has recently launched a number of new handsets, including the mid-range 5G-capable Nokia X20. This 6.67-inch handset, priced at £ 319.99 (with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage), is in tune with Nokia’s latest announcements and is located in a very crowded segment of the market.

Gopher Ogembo, senior director of HMD Global, Kenya and East Africa, said: “Quality and sophistication are the hallmarks of the new X-Series. With three years of AndroidTM updates and three years of monthly security updates, you can now keep your phone even longer. Our most accessible 5G phone to date, and its ambitious and purposeful features, from the new Dual Sight multi-camera mode to watermarking and color grading devices, you can enjoy capturing and sharing life’s precious moments with lightning-fast 5G. "

For cameras, the Nokia X20 includes 64 MP MP four rear cameras in a circular module. In addition to the 64 MP sensor, the camera module also has a 5 MP ultra-wide-angle 2 MP depth sensor and a 2 MP macro lens. The Nokia X20 has a 32 megapixel front camera for all selfie and video calls.

The Nokia X20 is powered by a 4470 mAh battery with 18W fast charge. For this, I expected at least 33 W of fast charging, as there are cheaper phones that support such speeds. HMD may have a better job here, to be honest.

The Nokia X20 is beautifully designed, firm to the touch and has an attractive back cover. There are two color variations. The Midnight Sun was made in bronze / gold, while my review device was Nordic Blue, a dark dark shade. Both options have a matte finish on the back, which is less slippery than many, and the phone performed quite well during my “couch testing” and stuck pretty well to the arm, although it slipped when it turned on the vibrating alarms.

There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the bottom edge of the phone and a fingerprint sensor on the power button on the right side. I found the latter to be effective, although resolving the face is also an option. On the left is a button to call Google Assistant and you will also find your SIM card. The X20 includes two SIM cards or a SIM card and a MicroSD card.

The camera is housed in an array of circular housings in the upper center of the back cover. If you hold the phone on a desktop, pressing down on either side of the screen can scroll left or right anywhere on the half, but the phone will not move with a light touch.

While the Nokia X20 looks good and is fairly easy to use, at 220 g it is quite heavy. It is also quite thick, 9.1 mm thick. The 79.7mm wide and 168.94mm deep desktop footprint features a 6.67-inch IPS screen with very visible frames and a small cut-out top center section for the front camera. The screen-to-body ratio is only 79.7%.

The X20’s display lags behind some similarly priced races. For example, the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G (75.1mm x 159.9mm x 8.4mm, 189g) has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED 1080 x 2400, 405ppi) screen. The Nokia X20 has a larger 6.67-inch screen with the same resolution (and therefore a slightly lower 395 ppi pixel density), but IPS technology isn’t as bright and percussive, and the refresh rate is fixed at 60 Hz, while the Galaxy A52 The 5G panel can be set to 120 Hz.

The X20 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 5G mobile platform, with 8GB of RAM in my review unit. On average, Geenekch gave 5 CPU values of 510 (single-core) and 1689 (multi-core), which is reasonable for a mid-range device. 128 GB of storage is built in, 18 GB out of the box, 110 GB remains for user storage. If this proves insufficient, you can increase the storage capacity with a MicroSD card in one of the SIM slots.

Android 11 is provided without an interface overlay, which means there are no third-party apps that replicate Android features. This also means there are no fancy changes to the settings, so if you’re looking for a simple, out-of-the-box experience, you’ll get it here. You also get a three-year warranty on security updates.

The front camera is a 32-megapixel wide-angle unit that made reasonable but not outstanding selfies. There are four cameras on the back: 64MP wide angle; 5MP ultra-wide viewing angle; 2MP depth sensor; and 2MP macro. The macro camera is 4 cm away it requires flexibility from the object, so it is quite inflexible and does not really do justice to what can be achieved with a mobile macro.

The highlight is probably Dual Sight mode, which allows you to capture videos from two different perspectives, such as normal distance and close-up, each sharing a portion of the screen that you can adjust between half and half by about two-thirds / one-third. Overall, though, the X20 has a distinctly average point-and-shoot camera.

In contrast, battery life is impressive. During the PCMark for Android Work 2.0 battery test, the 4470 mAh battery operated for 16 hours and 40 minutes, and many users had to spend a day between charges. Neither fast charging nor wireless charging is supported.
