Nokia Mobile will soon bring back its entire smartphone portfolio in Germany

N okia Mobile was recently forced by a Patent Troll organization to remove its older smartphones in Germany. Patent Troll VoiceAgeEVS LLC (VAEVS) has sued HMD Global in Germany for using the EVS feature in VoLTE-enabled smartphones.

The VoLTE communications patent is owned by VoiceAgeEVS LLC, which has claimed royalties from HMD Global. After the Nokia brand owner refused to do so, VoiceAgeEVS LLC barred the sale of the devices in EU courts.

They filed a lawsuit against HMD Global and won the case, which resulted in a ban on the sale of Nokia handsets in Germany and other markets. HMD Global is, of course, appealing because it is licensed on fair and reasonable terms.

Full official statement from HMD Global:

As the owner of a significant patent portfolio, HMD takes intellectual property rights seriously and is willing to offer and take over licenses on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (“FRAND”) terms. HMD is a defendant in several lawsuits filed by VoiceAgeEVS LLC in various jurisdictions, including Germany. We are disappointed with the December ruling of the VoiceAge lawsuit in Germany and we are appealing.

HMD remains confident in the outcome of the comprehensive debate and continues to offer consumers the tools, accessories and services they love, trust and want to keep.

In view of the excessive non-FRAND royalty claims made publicly by VAEVS, HMD has already taken steps to eliminate subsidies to EVS from products sold in Germany to allow sales to continue. HMD does not expect the removal of EVS features to have a significant impact on your business. HMD continues to sell a significant portfolio in Europe and will soon be adding the full portfolio to our websites.
