N okia has signed patent licensing agreements with Snap, known for its Snapchat app, and two other new licensors. Tejas Shah, who joined Nokia in November 2025 as head of licensing for new segments, announced the new agreements in a statement on Nokia’s website.

Nokia has been working to increase its patent licensing for streaming services, and Tejas Shah outlined new developments in this regard.

"We have signed seven bilateral licensing agreements with video streaming providers to date. The most recent video streaming agreement was signed late last year. I am pleased to announce that we have recently signed a licensing agreement with Snap Inc., as well as a social media company. A big thank you to everyone who was involved in closing these deals. The lawsuits against Paramount and Warner Bros. are also ongoing, and we are confident in our position and the outcome of the commercial disputes," Shah said.

Nokia filed a lawsuit against Paramount in August 2025, followed by Warner Bros. in November 2025. Nokia has determined that streaming services and devices benefit from the research and development of Nokia and other innovators - without it, the services and products simply would not work as consumers expect today.

Nokia says its inventions have had a strong impact on the development of all video codecs that have been released, from the H.264/AVC standard in the early 2000s to the H.266/VVC standard, which was finalized in 2020.

"Our teams of experts are working on a comprehensive set of proposals to help shape the future H.267 video coding standard. These include proposals to improve prediction accuracy, filter adaptability, and overall coding efficiency. For example, we are developing several key traditional coding tools for the Enhanced Compression Model (ECM). In addition, the team is doing exciting work in the area of neural network-based video coding, which brings measurable coding benefits and reduces decoder execution time," says Tejas Shah.

In addition, Nokia has developed and patented other interesting solutions, such as content optimization when switching between portrait and landscape, and the ability to fast-forward or rewind a video while displaying the selected moment as an image.

Licensing an extensive patent portfolio is a very important part of Nokia's current business. Nokia holds many patents for various mobile network standards, but also for standards such as Wi-Fi and video compression. In addition, Nokia also holds a number of patents not related to standardized technology.

Since 2000, Nokia has invested more than 150 billion euros in research and development, and Nokia owns more than 26,000 patent families, of which more than 7,000 have been identified as essential for 5G mobile network technology. Nokia's patent portfolio also protects more than 5,000 inventions related to multimedia products and services.

Patent licensing is very significant for Nokia's revenue. Nokia's annual net sales of patent licensing Technology have grown to approximately EUR 1.4 billion.

From the beginning of 2026, patent licensing will be part of Nokia's reorganization as part of the Technology Standards business, which in turn belongs to the Mobile Infrastructure business group.
