The series "Mobile 101, the Nokia Story" about the dramatic rise and fall of the Finnish phone company has been acquired by Disney+ and Walter Presents in several territories. The series was produced by the Finnish Rabbit Films and is represented by the outfit in international markets.
The six-part series, which sheds light on how a small Finnish company specializing in rubber boots became the world's largest mobile manufacturer at the turn of the 21st century, has been picked up by Disney+ Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. Walter Presents, meanwhile, bought it for the UK and Ireland. RUV Iceland has also acquired the first season of the series, which means that it will soon be shown in these countries.
"Mobile 101" was originally commissioned by Finnish broadcaster MTV3 Finland and streamer CMore in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The premiere was in 2022, to both critical and commercial acclaim.
"We are delighted to announce the first international sale of 'Mobile 101' and to bring this quintessentially Finnish story to audiences outside the Nordic countries," said Jonathan Tuovinen, Head of International at Rabbit Films.
"We all grew up with Nokia mobile phones, so this unique series has really resonated with customers and we hope that audiences around the world will be both entertained and informed by this wonderful nostalgic series," continued Tuovinen.
Directed and written by Maarit Lalli, the series shows how Nokia went from rubber boots to mobile phones in the 1990s, told from the perspective of lawyers, engineers and management.
On Walter Presents, Walter Iuzzolino praised the series for being a "crisp, edgy, edgy and unmissable show steeped in nostalgia and vintage pop culture". "Sharp writing, powerful performances from a brilliant ensemble cast, and beautiful direction and cinematography make this a delicious treat for lovers of great subtitled drama," added Iuzzolino. Along with "BlackBerry," "Mobile 101" is one of those titles that looks back at the rise and fall of tech companies.
