M ediaTek has officially unveiled its new Dimensity 8550 SoC, which is designed for mid-range smartphones. The Dimensity 8550 is closely related to the previous Dimensity 8500, but offers an improvement in AI capabilities.
The first Dimensity 8550 phones were already introduced to the Chinese market before the official launch of the SoC. These are the Honor 600 Pro for the Chinese market, as well as Oppo's new Reno 16.
The Dimensity 8550 features MediaTek's NPU 880 compute unit and an LLM Booster that supports Google's Gemini Nano V3 AI model.
Support for Gemini Nano V3 is one of the prerequisites for Google's recently announced Gemini Intelligence AI features, and for this, the Dimensity 8550 phones are ready to support these features. However, the hardware requirements for Gemini Intelligence include 12GB of RAM, which is even rarer in mid-range phones, but could become more common in the future due to new AI requirements.
Aside from the broader AI support, the Dimensity 8550 is similar to the Dimensity 8500 chip announced in January 2026. The 4-nanometer chip from TSMC has eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores, one of which is clocked at 3.4 GHz, three at 3.2 GHz, and four at 2.20 GHz. The graphics processor is an Arm Mali-G720 MC8. The SoC 5G modem supports download speeds of up to 5.17 Gbps.
