M ediaTek has introduced two new SoCs for mid-range smartphones, the new ones being known as the MediaTek Dimensity 7450 and MediaTek Dimensity 7450X, the latter of which is specifically designed for foldable phones.
The Dimensity 7450 series of chips are manufactured using a modern 4-nanometer process, which indicates good energy efficiency. The processor consists of eight cores, consisting of four powerful Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.6 GHz, as well as four additional power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. There will also be a sixth-generation NPU focused on AI computing and is said to offer about a seven percent improvement in AI performance compared to previous models.
On the graphics side, the Arm Mali-G615 MC2 GPU is used, which supports H.264, HEVC and VP9 codecs, among others. In terms of connectivity, the new chips largely support modern standards. There is 5G support (3GPP Release 17), which covers both SA and NSA modes. Download speeds are promising to reach 3.27 gigabits/second.
In addition, there is Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. Positioning is done using multiple GNSS systems, such as GPS, Galileo and BeiDou. Display support extends to WFHD+ resolution at a refresh rate of 120Hz, or Full HD+ resolution at 144Hz, so the chips offer a usable solution for smooth use and gaming.
The Dimensity 7450 and 7450X support cameras up to 200 megapixels, and also support 4K video recording at 30 frames/second. There are a number of advanced features, such as hardware-level facial recognition, multi-frame noise reduction, HDR video, and AI-assisted auto exposure, white balance, and focus.
The main difference between the two chips lies in the Dimensity 7450X model, which is optimized for foldable phones. It offers special support for two screens, which is especially important for clamshell devices. The chip is expected to appear in future foldable phones, the first of which will be the Motorola Razr 70.
