After spending decades in various roles in companies that are currently part of Nokia’s portfolio (AT&T Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent), the UK will leave Nokia in late March 2021, Nokia confirmed.

“We can confirm that Marcus Weldon, President of Nokia Bell Labs and Chief Technology Officer of Nokia Enterprise, has decided to step down at the end of the first quarter of 2021. Before you leave, you will help create our new strategic and technological organization. We will continue to ensure that Nokia has a strong technology base, enabling us to become a true technology leader in all areas and work with our customers and partners to grow our industry. "said a Nokia spokesman.

Weldon's position seemed uncertain when Nokia, led by new CEO Pekka Lundmark, announced a restructuring plan in late October identifying four new business groups (each with its own named leader) and plans to create a “corporate function” called Strategy. and technology that, Nokia noted, “includes strategic planning, long-term research, including Nokia Bell Labs, and IT and digitization”.

As noted at the time, the other influential leaders who are not tied to a role in the new structure are Basil Alwan, the current co-chair of the IP / Optical unit, which should become a new part. IP and Wireline Networks, led by Federico Guillén (currently Head of Customer Operations, EMEA and Asia); and Bhaskar Gorti, vendor’s digital CEO and current president of Nokia Softwar, which will be part of the new Cloud and Network Services division under Raghav Sahgal (currently head of Nokia Enterprise).

Weldon was a charismatic and vocal champion of the work of Bell Labs and is known for having informed and articulated views on the future direction of technology trends and how cutting-edge technology can be applied to the challenges of communication networks. We wish him well and look forward to learning about the industry’s next role.
