The band was founded in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, who was previously a member of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler. They came into the public consciousness with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that developed at the end of the 1970s, and their debut album under the title Iron Maiden was released in 1980.
After several member changes, they released a series of gold and platinum albums, The Number of the Beast (1982), Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere in Time (1986), and Seventh Son of a Seventh With the albums Son (1988), they became inescapable classics of heavy metal, and the band reached the peak of their commercial success. In the 1990s, member changes and changes in the musical climate made the band's work difficult, but from the 2000s onward, they became more and more successful again.
So far, the band has released 17 studio albums, 4 compilation albums, 9 concert albums and 4 limited edition records. In 2002, they received an Ivor Novello Award, and in recognition of their career, Hollywood's RockWalk preserves the handprints of the band members. So far, they have been nominated for a Grammy three times. They finally received the Grammy Award in 2011 for the song "El Dorado" from their 15th studio album, released in 2010, in the Best Metal Performance category.
Following the music of Iron Maiden, several subtypes of heavy metal were created, including power metal and speed metal, and it also had a great influence on the sound of heavy metal playing two guitars together. They played over 2,000 concerts throughout their career and are often cited as one of the most influential metal bands in rock history. Several of the band's songs are based on folklore, movies, and books, such as The Wicker Man, The Prisoner, To Tame a Land, Where Eagles Dare, Edge of Darkness, or Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The band's mascot is Eddie, who can be seen not only on the album covers, but also in the lyrics as well as at the band's concerts.
