S hipments of personal computers and mobile phones are expected to decline for the second year running in 2023, while phone shipments will sink to a decade low, IT research firm Gartner announced on Tuesday.

Mobile phone shipments will decline 4% to 1.34 billion in 2023, down from 1.40 billion in 2022, according to Gartner. In 2021, the total was 1.43 billion.

That was close to 2009 shipment levels, when Blackberry and Nokia phones were the market leaders as Apple tried to chip away at its dominance. The mobile phone market peaked in 2015, when shipments exceeded 1.9 billion units.

The pandemic has led to a fundamental change as people working from home don't feel the need to change phones as often, Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said in an interview.

"Consumers are keeping their phones longer than expected, six to nine months, and in the absence of meaningful new technology, they're moving from fixed contracts to flexible contracts,"he said.

Rising global interest rates and the cost of living have dampened demand for smartphones, hitting companies from Samsung to Apple. According to the research firm, PC shipments are expected to decline 6.8% this year after a 16% decline in 2022. Lenovo, HP Inc and Dell are the three largest PC manufacturers.

According to Gartner, the fall in the device market will slow in 2023, as they expect a less pessimistic economic outlook during the year and a possible increase in consumer and business spending.
