Funnily enough, similar negotiations took place back in 2018. The two sides could not agree then, and the topic was essentially dropped. Now, the source says, HMD is back at it. Neither the deal amount nor the terms were disclosed, so it’s too early to celebrate.
Still, the broader context supports this scenario. HMD recently announced a revival of the Asha brand — only this time, not for budget phones aimed at emerging markets, but for simple devices aimed at kids and digital detox.
A Lumia comeback would be a much bigger deal. The lineup was once known for its bold design and some of the best cameras on the market — which is why it holds a cult status that some fans still hold today. It’s worth noting that leaker SmashX_60 has previously leaked accurate information about unannounced HMD products, so this leak carries more weight than just a rumor.
The revival of the Lumia brand fits perfectly with HMD’s recent strategy. The company is using its historical heritage to revive old and popular lines based on modern needs. For example, it was recently announced that the Asha series will return. However, while Asha currently occupies the segment of simple digital detox and children's devices, Lumia is expected to be considered of a much higher technological status. Over time, Lumia smartphones have become famous for their bright design, polycarbonate bodies and, most importantly, high-quality cameras based on PureView technology. For many technology enthusiasts, this brand remains a symbol of quality and innovation. HMD aims to attract this very loyal audience.
