HMD Global, maker of Nokia-branded mobile devices, is working with key industry partners to make 5G-enabled smartphones more affordable in the Indian market, adding that launching "affordable" devices will be a key area for the company when the services become available. commercially available.

Florian Seiche, CEO, HMD Global said: “We are excited to work with key partners in the 5G space in India. Obviously, 5G is going to be the affordable part of the market that we are focusing on. We are firmly focused on bringing 5G to our smartphone portfolio more broadly."

In 2022, in addition to mid-range and premium X-series smartphones, several devices in the affordable G-series will also include 5G this year. "...it's our priority to make the 5G experience even stronger in our smartphones," he added.

“...we want to offer a great experience at an affordable price. We have shown this in the US market with what we do with operating customers. We are introducing 5G phones in large numbers. We are currently one of the two leading device manufacturers in the US in the affordable 5G smartphone segment,” he added.

Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, vice president of HMD Global, said: The launch of $100-$150 devices is a function of supply and demand. However, the current price of 5G chipsets is higher than that of 4G chipsets, so the prices will not drop sharply.

"5G will be introduced soon and there will be high demand for 5G smartphones," Kocchar said, adding that the price of 5G chipsets will decrease as demand increases.

India will auction 5G spectrum at the end of the month, with services expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.

“Currently, the price of 5G devices is around Rs 14,000-15,000 and is slowly coming down. At some point it will come down to around $100, but we will have to see when that will happen,” he added.

According to a recent Crisil report, prices of 5G phones are unlikely to come down in the near future, with an easing possible only in the 2022 festival quarter, when manufacturers are likely to clear inventories.
